He accomplished his research work in the Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany (an organ of University of Madras) and subsequently qualified to receive his Ph.D. Degree from the same University in 1988. During that tenure, in recognition of his research talent, the University identified him as Senior Research Fellow and subsequently elevated him as Research Associate. With the research skill and teaching talent finely honed in the AC Tech. Campus, Dr.Gajendran was entrusted to serve as full-time Assistant Professor under the Directorate of Collegiate Education, in the State Government of Tamilnadu. Within few years of the tenure, the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India recognized his research talent and appointed him as Scientific Officer in BARC. As a rare species (with Botany background) Dr.Gajendran made a distinguished service for 14 years as permanent central government employee in BARC/ IGCAR. The BARC-Technical Excellence Awardee of the year 1993 and HICARE Awardee of 1998, Dr.Gajendran left the organization on his own to join as a fulltime professor in the Department of Biology under the Ministry of Education to participate in the educational reconstruction process in The State of Eritrea. During the 4 year service in Africa, Dr.Gajendran assumed various academic administrative positions including as Head of the Department of Biology in College of Sciences, Director, Curriculum Development and Review in Eritrea Institute of Technology under Ministry of Education. Dr.Gajendran has also been the member of Senate, Academic Council, Editorial member of Science magazine, Board member of Research Council in EIT and invited guest expert for the Asmara-UN-Camp programs. In addition to Editorial services, he serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Centre for Advanced Study in Botany, University of Madras.
