Objectives: Anew micro-extraction technique, termed Ionic Liquid Impregnated Agarose Film Micro-Extraction (IL-AF-LPME) was developed for the determination of selected tricyclic antidepressant drugs prior to their determination using High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Ultraviolet Detection (HPLC-UV). Methods/Statistical Analysis: Agarose film impregnated with ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate) was utilized as supported liquid membrane between donor phase and acceptor phase. Three selected tricyclic drugs namely; imipramine, amitriptyline and chlorpromazine were employed as model compounds. Two important parameters namely, sample pH and extraction time comprehensively optimized while other parameters, stirring speed and acceptor phase volume were kept constant. Findings: Under the optimized IL-AF-LPME conditions, the proposed method provided good linearity with coefficients of determination (r2>/sup>) (0.9972-0.9984) and low Limits Of Detections (LODs) in the range of 0.0872-0.4273 μg L-1. High percentage recoveries were also obtained (89.9-108.2 %) for the real samples. Application/Improvements: This developed method was successfully utilized agarose film impregnated ionic liquid as supported ionic liquid membrane to the determination of selected tricycle antidepressants in river water sample.
