- Abstract
This paper describes the management and role of higher education in India, the type and growth of higher education
and its priorities as listed in the current 11th Five-Year Plan of Government of India. The study also stresses the need
for ranking Indian universities. The article focuses on new methodology of ranking of top 50 productive Indian
universities using publications, citations and international collaborative publication data. The factors affecting
productivity and quality of research in Indian universities were identified. The study also indicates the various methods
employed for ranking universities.
